Dubois County History Timeline


1802 First Dubois County settlers lay claim to land. The early settlers are Irish, Scots-Irish and English.
1803 Vincennes Tract, including Dubois County, ceded by Indiana to the U.S. Government.
1816 Indiana granted statehood.
1817 Cumberland Presbyterianism begins in Indiana in Madison Township.
1818 -19 Dubois County formed from Pike County territory and named after Toussaint Dubois. Portersville is the county seat.
1829 - 30 County seat moved from Portersville to Jasper.
1830 City of Jasper platted.
1834 First Catholic service in Dubois County, in Jasper.
1836 12 German families settle near Jasper; a German-speaking priest, the Rev. Joseph Kundek, assigned there two years later.
1837 Huntingburg platted.
1839 Log Courthouse in Jasper burns, county records lost forever.
1840 Ferdinand platted.
1843 The town of Celestine was founded.
1848 St. Paul’s Lutheran Church established.
1849 The Shiloh Meeting House outside of  Ireland constructed by carpenter James Stewart.
1860 Lemmon’s Church outside of Ireland constructed.
1860 Ireland was officially platted.
1864 Schnellville platted.
1867 Monastery Immaculate Conception founded in Ferdinand.
1867 Maltersville laid out in lots by Anna Malter.
1870 The Kitten Company in Ferdinand is producing the first steam-driven threshing machine.
1876 The Jasper Desk Co., now the oldest continuous desk manufacturing plant in the U.S., is founded.
1879 First railroad enters Dubois County.
1880 Construction of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper completed.
1883 Kyana platted.
1887 Huntingburg Old Town Hall and Fire Engine House built.
1905 Dubois County's youngest community, Cuzco, platted.
1906 Ferdinand News established.
1910 The current Dubois County Courthouse built.
1943 Uhl Pottery plant in Huntingburg closes after 35 years of operation there.
1950 Jasper is first city in U.S. to require all homes to have garbage disposals, thereby eliminating the need for garbage collection.
1951 Memorial Hospital became a reality.
1954 Aristokraft begins production as United Cabinet Company in Celestine (now known as MasterBrand) and in 1963 moved to Jasper.
1960 Ireland celebrates its 100th birthday.
1963 Tornado strikes Jasper.
1964 Schnellville celebrates its 100th birthday.
1965 Kessner Covered Bridge destroyed by vandals.
1977 Old Town Hall of Huntingburg under restoration.
1978

Patoka Reservoir built.

1980

Kyana’s zip code cancelled.

1984 Jasper resident Bill Schroeder receives an artificial heart. The second implant patient, he lives 620 days following surgery, making him the world's longest artificial heart-implant survivor.
1990 Huntingburg’s Old Town Hall re-dedicated.
1992 - 96 Three movies filmed in Huntingburg. “A Leaugue of Their Own”, “Hard Rain”, and “Soul of the Game”.
1994 County Poor Farm destroyed by fire.
1998

St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Haysville celebrated it’s 150th birthday.

1999

Dubois County Museum opened its doors to the public.

2000

Ferdinand Speak-easy razed.

2004 Dubois County Museum moved to its current location-in the former Jasper Corporation building.
2005 Hillham rejuvenating itself as a town.
2006

Ferdinand News celebrates its 100th birthday.
