SUBJECT: WINTER ART WORKSHOPS, JASPER COMMUNITY ARTS
The Jasper Community Arts Commission will host 10 art classes this winter at its Satellite Art Space, adjacent to the Jasper Municipal Pool Building. There will be 3 children’s classes, 6 adult classes, and 1 for all ages.

Shake Your Sillies Out invites pre-school children from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Mondays, February 13th – March 19th, 2012 (no class on March 5th, make up day will be Friday, March 9th). An afternoon filled with music and fun for your pre-schooler! Join us for classes as we sing, move, play, create, and listen. We’ll explore a wide variety of music types, including world music, jazz, pop, gospel, and dance music. This class combines imaginative play with fun while improving listening skills and encouraging socialization. We will have a whole lot of fun making music together! Instructed by Kara Bodle. The cost of this workshop is $45.

Adult Wheel Throwing will be offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Mondays, February 27th – March 19th, 2012. Enjoy an evening filled with clay and wheel- throwing. During this class we will learn how to create three- dimensional forms and wheel-throwing techniques. Limit 8 participants. Instructed by Jennifer Tolbert. The cost of this workshop is $30, plus a $15 materials fee.

Hand-Building Ceramics for Adult invites high school students and adults to attend classes from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, February 14th – March 20th, 2012. Think ceramics is just the potter’s wheel? Nope. You can make beautiful pieces without taking the time (and for many, frustration) of learning the potter’s wheel. We will make at least 3 projects in this class using nothing but our hands and some useful tools. Instructed by Andrea Fleck. The cost of this workshop is $60, plus a $15 materials fee.

Cultural Clay Experience (K-4) will be taught to children grades kindergarten through fourth from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays, February 15th through March 21st. Join us in creating functional and decorative pottery pieces inspired by cultures, new and old, from around the world. Instructed by Corie Eckerle. The cost of this workshop is $45, plus a $15 material fee.

Quilling invites high school students and adults to attend classes from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, February 15th through March 21st, 2012. Quilling, or paper filigree, is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs. This art is very useful in card making, ornaments, scrapbooking, and many more decorative elements. In this class we will learn how to create the individual elements that are used in quilling and apply them to designs. Instructed by Andrea Fleck. Cost of this workshop is $60.

Developing Your Artist Confidence will be offered to beginning adult artists from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, February 15th through March 21st, 2012. This course sets out to improve the foundations of your art making- drawing and sketching. During the course, we’ll discuss how artists visualize their subject matter, and how even the most challenging things can be broken down into easy, manageable pieces. We’ll be doing a variety of exercises and projects that will help show you how to take the creative ideas in your head and put them on paper. If you enjoy drawing, but fear you never made it past a childhood level, or just want to improve your drawings, this course will be great for you. Instructed by Drew Murray. Cost of this workshop is $45.

Wheel Work (5-8 grade) will be open to grade fifth through eighth from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, February 16th through March 22nd, 2012. Enjoy a class focusing on pottery basics for the beginner or a refresher for the previously experienced potter! Once the basics are learned, we will see where the wheel will take us! Limit 8 participants. Instructed by Corie Eckerle. Cost of this workshop is $45, plus a $15 material fee.

Jewelry Techniques for Adults will be offered to high school students and adults 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, February 16th through March 22nd, 2012. In this class we will try a couple of different jewelry techniques. Among the techniques we will explore are Precious Metal Clay (PMC), enameling, cutting copper shapes, polymer beads, clay beads, and using Easy Cast to create pendants. The possibilities are endless and you will be able to add your own personal touch to these jewelry pieces. No more than 10 participants. Instructed by Andrea Fleck. Cost of this workshop is $60, plus $10 material fee.

Digital Photography will be offered to beginning high school and adult photographers from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturdays, February 18th through March 24th, 2012. Enjoy a class allowing you to approach photography in more of an art form manner, rather than your everyday photograph skills. We will manipulate photos using Elements computer programming. Participants will need to bring a laptop and have their own camera and a general working knowledge of it. Instructed by Harold Brown. Cost of this workshop is $60.

Origami invites all ages from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturdays, February 18th, March 3rd and 17th, 2012. Come try something new and join artist, Tomomi Lehee while she teaches us the art of Japanese paper folding. Instructed by Tomomi Lehee. Cost of this workshop is $25.

Enrollment is limited for all of these classes and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the Jasper Arts Center at (812) 482-3070 right away to reserve a class for you or your child. Registration deadline is Wednesday, February 8th, 2012.
